About Nelson Rural

Nelson Rural School is home to 310 students and boasts a strong sense of school spirit and pride. Our school culture is centered around celebrating what it means to be a Nelson Raider. We engage in monthly activities that foster school pride, bringing our community together and allowing our students to show their love for the school they belong to.

We are most proud of the deep sense of community at Nelson. The school is at the heart of the Nelson community, with parents and families fully invested in the school’s success. Their continuous support in all of our initiatives and activities is a testament to the strong bonds we share.

At Nelson, we believe in recognizing the positive actions of all our students. Our primary (K-2) students are acknowledged with I-Care Kid awards when they demonstrate kindness, helpfulness, and good listening skills. For our elementary level (3-5), students are given Bucket Filler awards for being positive peers and showing kindness to others. As for our middle school students (6-8), we adapted our recognition system after they shared their preference for quieter, more personal acknowledgments. While the Shout Out award was initially public, it has now become a more subtle teacher-student recognition to honor students in a way that respects their preferences.

Nelson also offers a wide variety of activities both in the classroom and beyond. Listening to our students’ desire for more choice in their learning, we introduced an elective block where students can select from a range of activities each week. These blocks, which change throughout the year, offer a diverse selection, from bass fishing and biking in the spring and fall to skating, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing in the winter. This flexibility allows our students to explore new skills and interests, making learning at Nelson an engaging and dynamic experience.
